The
cup itself (as seen in the picture to your right) is shaped in the form
a maiden holding a cup above her head. Her dress is itself an
upside-down goblet while the other cup (the one the maiden is holding)
is a swivel cup. As the toast begins, the best man takes the cup and
holds it upside down while filling it with whatever beverage the couple
is toasting with. As he does this, he tells the history of the cup and
how the tradition came to be. After he fills the maiden's "dress", he
will then fill the maiden's "cup", which has swiveled to remain upright
and able to be filled with the same beverage. The goblet is then handed
to the groom and bride who are instructed to drink from the glass at
the same time to signify their union as one. The groom holds the dress
while the bride holds the swivel cup.
At
this time, right before they are about to drink, the maid of honor will
traditionally (and oh-so conveniently) state to the crowd that whoever
finishes their drink first will be the "ruler of the nest". As the
bride will obviously finish her small cup before the groom, the joke is
always on him. Because as we all know, a happy wife truly does equal a
happy life.
We'll see you next week for more wedding traditions from around the globe! Until then, happy planning!
