Here is a good timeline for the important stuff: Twelve months before your wedding should be when you announce your engagement, go over budget, start looking at reception sites, and come up with a preliminary guest list. Nine months before you should select your bridal party members, do your gift registry, start shopping for your gown and the bridesmaids' dresses, and choose your photographer, florist and DJ. Six months before you should order invitations, shop for rings, select tuxedos, arrange for hotel rooms for out-of-town guests, and arrange rehearsal dinner. Four months before you should make honeymoon arrangements, get blood tests and physical (if your state requires this), shop for bridal party gifts, order cake (if not included at reception site), confirm order with florist. Six to Eight weeks before you should mail invitations, do a hair and makeup "run through", schedule final dress fittings, set up a system for guest responses and start figuring table seating. Two to four weeks before you should choose all accessories you will be wearing, do seating arrangements for reception, confirm details with caterer, florist, etc., give caterer a final head count, make appointments for message, hair, etc., send engagement photo and announcement to newspaper, prepare lists for bridesmaids, ushers and anyone who will be a part of the ceremony. One week before you should host a bridesmaid luncheon, prepare envelopes with fees and gratuities for clergy, maitre d', DJ, etc., arrange time to drop of favors, etc. to reception site, pack for honeymoon, have manicures, messages, etc. during this week. The day before you should greet and settle any out-of-town guests, arrange for someone trustworthy to take care of license, rings and tip envelopes, arrange beauty touch-ups And don't forget to relax and get some sleep.

Marriage License: Your marriage license is valid for 30 days and cannot be issued until 72 hours after application has been submitted. The license should be issued in the town that the ceremony will take place. Both Bride and Groom need to be present, along with one witness when filing the application and they will need to have birth certificates and another form of identification. If either was previously married, then that person needs to submit proof of the divorce decree. Some states do not require blood tests any more (NJ is one of those states). The officiator is the person who files the license in the town where the ceremony took place within five days of the ceremony.

Wondering what kind of flowers to have for the wedding? Well, if you are like me, then everything you pick for this special day has to have special meaning as well. All flowers are beautiful, some more so than others, but it's nice to have a little story behind the choice. For instance, was there a certain type of flower that your fiancé gave you on your first date? What is your birth flower? His? Do they look pretty together? What time of year are you getting married and what is in bloom then? Or, you can pick a flower based on what it symbolizes: Azaleas, yellow irises and orchids symbolize passion and romance, Forget-me-nots mean true love, Ivy is the symbol for marriage, Violets are for faithfulness, Tulips are another declaration of love as are red carnations and red chrysanthemums, gloxinia means love at first sight, daisy represents loyal love and dahlia means forever yours. The rose family has a list of meanings as well: the primrose means that I can't live without you, full red roses are for beauty, damask roses are the ambassadors of love, hibiscus roses are for delicate beauty, rosebuds symbolize one who is pure and lovely, a single full bloom rose says "I love you", white roses represent innocence and purity while white and red roses together symbolize unity. So, whatever it is that you would like to say, flowers can say it!

Ever wonder where certain traditions come from? Well, the wedding cake has many different traditions attached to it. The roman used to bake flour-based buns and rolls at weddings to ensure fertility. From there, the Elizabethans started to stack baked goods for the bride and groom to share a kiss over. However, it was the French who decided to keep these buns and rolls together by frosting them with sugar. Hence, the first tiered wedding cake. As for cutting the cake, the bride cuts the first slice so that no one else can "cut in” on the happiness and sweetness that belong to her. Some traditions have the guests then crumbling the cake and pouring it over the bride's head, while other traditions have the cake being cut and boxed individually for the guests so they may take home a piece of the happiness. Either way, the very top piece of the cake is to be frozen by the bride and groom and left untouched until their first anniversary when they have a piece together, which, by the way, may be a very well-meaning tradition but as anyone who has ever had year-old frozen cake knows, it's not the tastiest!

Aspirin, Band Aids, bottled water, breath mints (a must), chalk or corn starch to cover last-minute stains on your gown, clear nail polish in case of stocking runs, extra pantyhose, eye drops, quick dry glue, tissues, talcum powder, safety pins, straws for sipping liquid so lipstick doesn’t smear, mini sewing kit, cotton swabs, hairspray, hand wipes, hairpins/ponytail holders. No rice throwing? No problem . . . there are plenty of things you can throw at the new Mr. and Mrs. In fact, the Swiss have a very sweet tradition of throwing candy at the newlyweds. Guests can gently lob wrapped treats at the couple (and the young guests can gather them up!). Bird seed is a great way to stick close to tradition but do something nice for the birds too. Speaking of birds, the release of doves is a very classic symbol of peace and love. Of course, if you would like to do something a little unique, you can toss a mixture of herbs at the bride and groom: rosemary symbolizes remembrance; mint signifies joy and lavender which is for love make a great mixture for a wedding. And, if you don’t feel like throwing anything, you can always just blow bubbles at the couple as they make their way out of the ceremony, or have guests make a path for the newlyweds with lit candles: both make for great pictures.

Unless the bride and groom are paying for everything themselves, then who pays for what is a delicate but necessary conversation which has to take place. Traditionally, the bride’s parents pay for the entire wedding reception while the groom’s parents pay for the rehearsal dinner. These days, it is not unusual for families to share expenses. It is important to remain realistic with your budget and allow anyone who is contributing financially to have a fair say. As a general guideline, the Bride and her family pay for the engagement photo and party, invitations, photography, wedding dress and accessories, flowers, wedding party transportation, Church rental, music, groom’s ring and gifts for the Bride’s attendants, toasting glasses, cake topper, cake knife, garter and reception hall. The groom and his family pay for the Bride’s engagement and wedding ring, the Bride’s bouquet and the throw away bouquet, the Bride’s gift and the groomsmen gifts, the Groom’s attire, the marriage license, any fees for the priest or clergy, boutonnieres for all men as well as the flowers for mothers and grandmothers, the honeymoon trip, the rehearsal dinner, accommodations for out-of-town bridal party members and the Groom’s parents may offer to pay the bar bill for the reception. A bridal shower or luncheon would be given by the mother of the Bride, maid of honor or all bridesmaids while a bachelor party is thrown by the groomsmen and best man.
