Wedding Tip of the Week - January 30, 2010

Beyond your Bridal Party, there are several other people who you will want to thank for helping to make your day special. When discussing tipping, the general rule is that if you hire someone from a company then you tip but, if you hire the owner, then you are not obligated to tip that person. For delivery and security people, $5-$10 per person is customary; for hair and make-up services, 15-20% of the total bill is what should be tipped; the same tip of 15-20% of the bill is also tipped to chauffeurs; valets and restroom attendants generally receive $0.50 per guest; photo and video crew can split 10% of the total bill as a gratuity and your Maitre d’ generally receives $2 to $3 per guest in attendance as a gratuity. Above and beyond the service charge, you can tip $20-$40 per bartender and $20-$25 per server if you would like. It is best to put tips in envelopes beforehand and have a trusted family friend or member of the Bridal Party distribute them discreetly.

Every bride wants to be in great shape for her wedding day. You should start with a diet and exercise regimen at least six months to a year before the big day. Being asked to stand up for someone at their wedding is a very big honor. There is a lot to consider when making the decision to ask someone to be a groomsman or bridesmaid. You want to make sure that your closest friends whom you want to share in this day have the time and resources to fulfill their duties. Some things you may want to ask yourself before asking them are: 1) Are they financially able to do this? There are so many expenses to consider: tuxedo rental, purchasing a gown, throwing a shower or bachelor party, travel expenses and lodging if they are from out of town . . . 2) Do they have children? If they do, will children be invited to attend or will you have to arrange for a babysitter? Will the children be a part of the wedding, and if so, are they old enough to be able to handle it? 3) Are there family issues or opinions that may dictate who should stand up for you? And if so, you can always create an “honorary” position for someone. 4) Dress style for bridesmaids may be dictated by the fact that everyone may be a different size or body type.

Wedding Tip - Vanity Fare Caterers - January 17, 2010

Now that you have your guest list complete, it is time to order your invitations. This should be done about four to five months before the wedding. Make sure you order about a dozen more than you actually need in case you make a mistake when addressing them. Also, keep in mind what other items you might need printed, such as place cards, napkins, thank you cards or even programs. Invitations should be sent out six weeks before the wedding with enough postage on the return envelope and with an R.S.V.P. date approximately two weeks before the wedding. Final tip, anyone over 17 should receive their own invitation.

One of the most stressful parts of planning your wedding can be putting together the guest list. The capacity of the venue and your budget will determine how many people to invite. Depending on who is paying for the wedding, the bride and groom should make their “must-invite” list and then divide the rest of the invitations between parents.
